About Lake Kivu

Lake Kivu is one of the African Great Lakes, located on the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). It covers an area of about 2,700 square kilometers, with more than half of the lake lying within Rwanda.

Key features of Lake Kivu include:

  • Geography: The lake is situated in the Albertine Rift, part of the western branch of the East African Rift Valley, at an altitude of about 1,460 meters above sea level.

  • Size and Depth: Lake Kivu is approximately 90 km long and 50 km wide, with a maximum depth of around 480 meters.

  • Natural beauty: The lake is surrounded by lush hills and volcanic landscapes, offering stunning views and serene beaches.

  • Tourism and Recreation: Popular activities include boating, kayaking, swimming, fishing, and relaxing at lakeside resorts and towns such as GisenyiKibuye, and Huye.

  • Biodiversity: The lake supports a variety of fish species, including the endemic Tanganyika sardine.

  • Unique characteristics: Lake Kivu is known for its large methane gas reserves trapped deep in its waters, which are being explored for sustainable energy production.

  • Cultural Importance: The lake is central to the livelihoods and cultures of surrounding communities in both Rwanda and DRC.
