Lake Mutanda

Lake Mutanda is a beautiful freshwater lake located in the mountainous Kisoro District of southwestern Uganda, at an altitude of 1,800 meters near the Virunga volcanoes. The lake has 15 islands, the largest being Mutanda Island, home to the Abagesera Clan. Python Island is known for its pythons, while Punishment Island carries historical significance.

The lake’s surroundings support a rich variety of plants and animals, including bird species such as kingfishers, kites, and Uganda’s national bird, the Crested Crane. Unique mammals include the African clawless otter. Although hippos once lived here, they were last seen in 1994.

Visitors can enjoy activities like:
