About Mount Elgon

Mount Elgon is an ancient extinct volcano in Uganda, once Africa’s tallest mountain, now standing at 4,321m, making it the 4th highest peak in East Africa. It holds deep cultural significance for the Bagisu, Sabiny, and Ndorobo tribes, with traditions like the Bagisu circumcision ritual (Imbalu) linked to the mountain.

Mount Elgon boasts the largest volcanic base in the world (4,000 km²) and features diverse landscapes including valleys, waterfalls, caves, and Afro-alpine vegetation. It is a biodiversity hotspot with over 300 bird species and various mammals such as forest elephants, blue monkeys, and leopards.

The mountain is part of a UNESCO Man & Biosphere Reserve, protected across Uganda and Kenya. It offers unique trekking experiences, including the Wagagai Peak, a vast 40km² caldera, Sipi Falls, hot springs, and Kitum Cave.
